The 50-escudo note depicting Joćo de Azevedo Coutinho. This note circulated in Mozambique prior to and immediately after independence. Joćo Coutinho was a political, military and colonial administrator of the Portuguese Navy, who reached the rank of Honorary Rear Admiral at the age of 25. He was acclaimed for his role in the campaigns of conquest and pacification of the Portuguese colonies in Africa and he was deputy governor general of the colony of Mozambique from 1905 to 1906.
