The overprinted 500-escudo note, with the original date of 22 March 1967. Alfredo Augusto Caldas Xavier (1825–1896), depicted on this note, was a Portuguese military engineer, explorer and colonial administrator who distinguished himself in the nineteenth century pacification campaigns in Mozambique. According to some reports Caldas Xavier was the most illustrious of all the officers who have honoured the name of Portugal in Africa.
