The Portraits of Queen Elizabeth II

Portrait 34

Date of Original Image: 11 February 1977
Image:
The image on the banknote is engraved from a photograph taken during a visit to Western Samoa (now simply "Samoa") by Her Majesty and Prince Phillip on 11 February 1977. Included in the photograph is Samoa’s Head of State, Malietoa Tanumafili II (at centre) and Prime Minister Olaf "Efi" Tamasese (at right; later Tui Ātua Tupua Tamasese Tupuola Tufuga).
The engraving on the banknote has re-imagined the photograph (above). The image of Her Majesty is replaced by a different image photographed by Tim Graham at the same event.
The image on the banknote has removed Malietoa Tanumafili II and maintained Olaf "Efi" Tamasese. Mr. Tamases is now (in 2026) a Samoan paramount chief, politician and statesman who served as prime minister of Samoa from 1976 to 1982 and again later in 1982, and as O le Ao o le Malo (head of state) of Samoa from 2007 to 2017. He is currently a member of the Council of Deputies, having previously sat on the council from 2004 to 2007. (Wikimedia, viewed September 2026.)
Use of this Portrait:
  • Back of Samoa $100.00. A non-circulating, commemorative note issued in 2026.
